MAY 18-20, 2021 AFRICA TOP SCHOOL AWARDS

Check out the current reigning Schools in Africa (Nigeria) and the 2021 Who’s Who in the Management of Basic and Secondary Education. The awards were presented in Lagos Sheraton Hotel Ikeja on May 18, 2021 by the Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo. The awards were presented in Abuja Green Minds Hotel Limited, Utako on May 20, 2021 by the Federal Minister of State for Education, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba.

Mrs. Abiola Elizabeth Taiwo

Mrs. Abiola Elizabeth Taiwo is the current best principal in Education District 1, Agege and an award winning school administrator. She possesses great passion for the upliftment of Education in Lagos State. A resourceful and visionary leader, with a drive for genuine excellence. This is evident in the 100% WASSCE result achieved by Vetland Senior Grammar School.
The strategies employed by the teachers under her thorough supervision through the students’ use of well-equipped laboratories, unrestricted access to library have helped in attaining great feats.
Our students are inspired to have positive mental attitude for success through regular motivational talks. Our dedicated academic staff go extra miles by conducting bi-weekly mock Assessment to prepare students and identify areas of weaknesses.
In addition, breakfast and weekend classes are used for extensive treatment of WASSCE Past Questions in all subjects which has helped them to cover much grounds.
Peer mentoring has also helped the students in learning from one another. This method has proved to be effective. Collaborative teaching is utilized by getting teachers from other Schools /Departments to teach their areas of expertise. Our co-curricular activities have also strengthened our students’ communication skills.
It is laudable that 80% of our 2019 set excelled in various matriculation examinations and are gainfully admitted into Institution of higher learning.

REVD SUNDAY OLUBUSOLA SOFEKUN; PRINCIAL CMS GRAMMAR SCHOOL

The Revd Sunday Olubusola Sofekun is the current and the 25th Principal of CMS Grammar School, Bariga. Born in Lagos in the early 60s to Late Pa Robert Sofekun of Ijebu stock from Ogun State, South-West Nigeria, Revd. Sofekun started his educational career in Seventh Day Adventist Primary School Abule-Oja,Lagos,1967-1973 and Ijebu-Ode Grammar School, Jebu-Ode between 1973-1978.He had his N.C.E. from Ogun State College of Education 1981-1984.He matriculated into the University of Ibadan where he bagged his B.Ed in Christian Religious Studies and M.Ed. in Industrial Relations
He started his working career in 1985 when joined the Lagos State Ministry of Education as a classroom teacher, precisely at Oniwaya High School, Agege, Lagos. In 1987, he resumed at CMS Girls Grammar School, Bariga. There, he put his musical talent to bear when he composed the school’s anthem in 1990.In 1998, he was posted to Igbobi College, Yaba where he served as the Head, Language Department till September 2001 when the school was returned to the Anglican Communion in Lagos. His next port of call was Angus Memorial Grammar School, a next door neighbour of his erstwhile Igbobi College.
His hard work and dedication to service earned him a duty post by way of promotion when he was appointed Vice Principal, Maya Community Senior Grammar School, Maya, Ikorodu in February 2017.A year later, He became the Principal of Maya Community Junior Grammar School in May 2018.He voluntarily retired from Lagos State Civil Service in October 2018.
Revd Sofekun is a man of many parts. In his entire working career, he is most remembered as a disciplinarian of high repute. He fell in love with church music early in life, perhaps this influenced him into taking ‘Holy Order’, a singular step that that propelled him into Priesthood in 2012.He is currently the Vicar, Anglican Church of the Living Faith, Erunwen, Ikorodu
He is a highly decorated man as a receiver of many awards, some of them are Fellow of Institute of Corporate Administration and Fellow, Institute of Management Consultants, Certified Management Consultant, Fellow, Institute of Educational Leadership Practitioners, Youth Orientation for Development) a UNESCO N.G.O., Service Award holder, Fountain of Life for the Needy Foundation

MRS.FAVOUR MARTINA EDEM-NSE

Dr. (Mrs.) Favour Martina Edem-Nse was born on 3rd July, 1962 in Lagos, Nigeria. She attended Reagan Memorial Baptist Girls Primary School and Reagan Memorial Baptist Girls Secondary School, Lagos.
For further studies, she attended Obafemi Awolowo University Ile Ife where she bagged B. A Ed (History) in 1985 and University of Jo’s where she bagged M. Ed (Educational Administration and Planning) in 1983 and her PhD in the same course in 2007.
The “Amazon” as she is fondly called, did her National Youth Service at Barau Suleiman Teachers College (1985-1986). She joined the FCTA workforce as a History teacher and HOD Social Sciences at GSS Karu. She was also an inspector in the Department of quality assurance from 2000 to 2010. She rose through the ranks to become the pioneer principal of GSS Mpape (2011-2012). Thereafter she was transferred to GSS Tudun Wada, Wuse Zone 4 (2012-2013). She berthed at GSS Bwari as the principal where she has held sway since 2013. It is worthy of note that from a humble beginning as an Education Officer II, Dr. (Mrs.) Favour Martina Edem-Nse has risen to the post of Director.
Under her administration as the principal of GSS Bwari, the following projects have been executed:
1. Construction of Geographical Garden
2. Installation of CCTV Network
3. Maintenance of water and electricity infrastructure
4. Construction of basketball court (on-going)
She also introduced the following programmes to the school:
1. Annual best staff award
2. Students Parliament
3. Bi-annual Cultural Day Celebration
The school has also won the following prizes and awards under her leadership:
1. 2018 FCT Stan project competition – 1st position (Represented FCT at the National Level in Katsina)
2. 2018 NNPC National Quiz Competition Bwari zone- 1st position
3. NTA/ EIV Expo 2018- 1st position (Represented FCT at the National Level)
4. 2018 Jets project competition – 2nd position
5. 2018 774 young Nigeria Scientist Presidential Award FCT Zone – 2nd position
6. 2018 Federal Science and Technology Expo- 3rd position Nationwide
7. 2019 Jets project competition – 2nd position
8. NTA channel 5, Abuja Art and Crafts Category, FCT Children Arts, Science and Technology Exhibition 2019- 1st position.
9. NTA project competition on “Promoting Unity and Innovation in Youths as Agents of Change Through Science and Arts” 2019. 1st Position
10. Winner, Zonal Stage, 2020 (5th Edition) National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies FCT quiz competition on Legislature and Democracy.

The cordial relationship which she has built between the school and the host community has led to a partnership between the institution and JAMB. As a result of this, JAMB has donated 660 set of student bunks, 250 students’ desks, 2 hand-pump boreholes and 35 KVA Mikano Perking generator set to the school.
To describe this icon as versatile is not an understatement. She is a teacher, disciplinarian, educator, mentor, philanthropist, motivator and a counsellor. To cap it all, Dr. (Mrs.) Favour Martina Edem-Nse is a lover of humanity.
Let me quickly mention here that this woman is humble, and has a good sense of humour. She is of impeccable character, very reliable, full of initiatives and highly resourceful.
