AFRICA TOP SCHOOLS AWARDS

"Connecting outstanding parents, students, old students, and primary schools to secondary schools."

(NIGERIA SECTOR ONLY - LIST OF AWARDEES SINCE 2012/13)

The Africa Top Schools Report and Awards, a pioneering initiative of the Africa Brands Review since the 2012/13 academic year, is dedicated to identifying, celebrating, and empowering exceptional school brands across Africa. Over the past decade, this program has made remarkable strides through its three core pillars:

Key Activities:

  1. Research and Insights:
    1. Analyzing the habits and practices of top-performing school brands.
    2. Developing actionable strategies to enhance enrollment and improve learning outcomes.
    3. Capacity Building:
    4. Providing training resources to propel high-performing schools to greater excellence.
    5. Facilitating peer learning and the exchange of best practices among educational institutions.
    6. Recognition and Celebration:
    7. Hosting annual awards to honor schools that consistently deliver exceptional education.

Achievements:

  • Successfully identified and celebrated the Top 1,000 School Brands over the past decade.
  • Earned recognition as The Africa Top Schools by the distinguished Ajebidan Winners Club.
  • Launched five transformative initiatives:
  1. Africa Great Principals Academy: Empowering school leaders with cutting-edge training programs.
  2. African Principals Conference Initiative: Creating platforms for collaboration and knowledge sharing among education leaders.
  3. Authored and Published Two Essential Books:
  1. The Transformative Principals Handbook
  2. The Handbook on Understanding Bullying
  1. ABR Students Well-being Ambassadors Program/Club:
  1. Advocating for anti-bullying initiatives.
  2. Supporting peer-to-peer learning outcomes improvement.

  1. Promoting International Best Practices:
  1. Organizing study tours to Finland, Sweden, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, and Dubai.
  2. Incorporating insights from Finland's "less is more" approach to education and Germany’s dual-purpose vocational training.
  3. Integrating international child-care and bullying prevention strategies into African schools.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The Africa Top Schools awards are based on a comprehensive evaluation across several key areas:

Primary Criteria:

  1. Academic Performance: This is a crucial factor. We partner with examination bodies like the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), NECO, JAMB, and IJMB, to identify best-performing schools based on results. This includes:
    1. Overall pass rates.
    2. Performance in key subjects (e.g., Mathematics, English Language).
    3. Successful transitioning of students into higher education, including producing first-class degree students in top-ranked universities globally.
  2. Facilities: The quality and adequacy of school facilities are assessed through on-ground visits, indicating a commitment to providing a conducive learning environment.
  3. Curriculum: The breadth, depth, and innovation of the curriculum are evaluated, including:
    1. Unique participation in curricular and extracurricular activities that enhance the overall learning experience.
    2. Integration of modern educational concepts and digital literacy.
  4. Overall School Practices: This encompasses a holistic view of how the school operates, including:
    1. Leadership and Governance: Strong, visionary leadership by principals and effective school governance are highlighted as key to success.
    2. Teaching Methods: Assessment of teaching methodologies to ensure they are effective and nurture students into "solution providers for the future."
    3. Commitment to Academic Excellence: A demonstrated dedication to high standards of learning.
    4. Community Engagement: Proactive involvement in community initiatives that enrich students' lives and strengthen local connections.
    5. Data-Driven Strategies: The application of data analytics to boost learning outcomes.
    6. Supportive Ecosystems: Growth and engagement from alumni, PTAs, NGOs, businesses, and other stakeholders playing a role in the school's prosperity.
    7. Growing Enrollment: Evidence of increasing student population, reflecting the institution's reputation and desirability.
    8. Student Well-being and Holistic Development: Excellence in holistic development and student well-being, including leadership development, and potentially catering to special needs education.
    9. Teacher Professional Development: Excellence in continuous professional development for teachers.
    10. Environmental Sustainability: Initiatives related to environmental consciousness.
    11. Promoting Cultural Diversity: Efforts to foster a diverse and inclusive environment.

Awards Categories (beyond just "Top Schools"):

Africa Top Schools recognizes individuals and specific areas of excellence through various award categories, which may include:

  1. Outstanding Principals/Administrators
  2. Most Innovative School
  3. Best School for Digital Literacy
  4. Best School for Special Needs Education
  5. Excellence in Community Engagement
  6. Excellence in Teacher Professional Development
  7. Africa Pillars of Education Support (for outstanding alumni executives)
  8. Africa Unique Leader Award

Selection Process:

The selection process is multi-faceted:

  1. Partnerships: We partner with examination bodies like WAEC, NECO, JAMB, and IJMB.
  2. On-Ground Visits: Rigorous on-ground visits are conducted to assess facilities, teaching methods, and commitment to excellence.
  3. ATS Awards Quiz Competition (New from 2025): In response to concerns about external examination malpractices, a new quiz competition across Mathematics, English Language, and Civic Education has been introduced. Schools excelling in this quiz will qualify for the final selection.
  4. Nominations: We encourage nominations, though our research team also identifies candidates.
  5. Expert Panel Evaluation: An impartial panel of individuals, including academic leaders, conducts research, fact-checking, and evaluates nominees based purely on merit.

In essence, Africa Top Schools goes beyond just exam results to consider a wide range of factors that contribute to a school's overall quality, impact, and commitment to student development and educational excellence across the African continent.
