Following the enactment of the bill to bring back the old National Anthem, Nigerian schools will now revert to the historic national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.” This new law requires all schools to incorporate the old anthem into daily assemblies and official events.
The return of the anthem, originally used from 1960 to 1978 befofe it was replaced by "Arise O compatriots", is intended to reignite national pride and cultural awareness among students. Advocates believe that “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” embodies strong patriotic emotions that will resonate with the younger generation. In schools, where fostering a national identity is vital, the anthem is seen as a key instrument for promoting unity and patriotism.
Schools across Nigeria must now adopt the old anthem for daily assemblies and official functions. Educational authorities are set to provide the necessary training and resources to ensure a seamless transition.
Nigeria, we hail thee, Our own dear native land, Though tribes and tongue may differ In brotherhood we stand, Nigerians all, and proud to serve Our sovereign Motherland. Our flag shall be a symbol That truth and justice reign, In peace or battle honour'd, And this we count as gain, To hand on to our children A banner without stain. O God of all creation, Grant this our one request. Help us to build a nation Where no man is oppressed, And so with peace and plenty Nigeria may be blessed.
As schools prepare to implement this change, the focus remains on strengthening national unity and pride among students.
