November 11-15, 2024 NATIONAL WEEK OF ACTION AGAINST BUYING & VIOLENCE IN SCHOOLS
THEME: “Everyone Belongs & I Will Tell”
The week is coordinated by the African Principals Conference Initiative (APCI), a dedicated problem solvers organization with a passionate commitment to fostering safe learning environments and care for lifelong learners across Africa. We have worked with over 1000 school leaders to decide the theme for this year anti-bullying week.
In a period of national rebirth, it is appropriate to ensure that our schools are learning centers for skills needed for global competition in the 21st- century. Learning can only take place in a safe environment. Hence, it is vital to restore relationship and teach appropriate way to relate in our schools. This pack has been designed to help schools celebrate and take part in the Nov. 11-15, 2024 National Week of Action Against Bullying & Violence in Schools. The suggested timetable for 1-hour daily activities for the week has centered around two activities:
- Bullying policy. A good policy is one that every student, and every stakeholder of the school can recite off hand. Regrettably in Nigeria today, there is less than 2% awareness, and comprehension of any school bullying policy.
- Promoting Kindness in school. There must be deliberate effort to create culture of kindness in our schools. Kindness must inform both how the school does business, and how it treats students and workers. This will make students and teachers to be happier. “Those that feel better, will learn better”. The outlined daily activities for the week will build kindness. It includes assembly pan, lesson plan on kindness, and cross-cultural activity ideas.
AIMS OF THE WEEK
- Promote anti-bullying violence initiatives.
- Raise awareness of how to prevent and respond to bullying & violence.
- Highlight steps taken to create inclusive and safe school communities.
- Provide opportunity for schools to share understanding about bullying behaviors, and share their bullying prevention policies and strategies.
- The national week of action will unite government, faith based, community and private schools.
- Send a clear message that bullying and violence are not accepted in our schools
DAY 1, Monday, November 11, 2024
Let’s talk about bullying before it happens. So students can recognize it, and know what to do. Introduce the week to them in the assembly.
- Have you seen bullying happening?
- What did you do?
- How did you feel?
- Why do you think some people bully other students?
- Who are the adults you would talk to, when it comes to things like bullying?
- Are you aware of help for victims of bullying in this school? Starting with the reporting procedure?
THE KINDNESS QUESTIONS
Let’s start today, by talking of how to restore good relationship with every member of this school. Let’s talk about kindness.
Ask students to think of some examples of kindness that have either happened to them, or that they have seen on line or on TV that has expired them. Ask some members of staff to have examples ready that they can suggests well as what happened? How did it make them feel?
ACTIVITIES
- Answer the 5 kindness questions (sheet attached): Am I kind myself? Am I kind tom others? Are people kind to me? Do I understand when people are kind to me? Do I help people who are being bullied?
- Can we start a chain reaction or ripple effect of kindness in our school? Ask every student to write another word for kindness on the board/ or on a card; no word must be repeated. This is to broaden students understanding of kindness. Collect the card, and form it into a long kindness chain or use it to make a gallery for kindness.
